Recipes from a Gujarati Kitchen contains recipes that have been passed down to Taruna Chauhan from her mother, mother-in-law, and other family members. For Taruna, food was an important part of growing up. Whenever her family had visitors, they never left without eating, and even as a low-income family, there was always food on the table. Taruna’s love for food and cooking has never left her, and learning to cook at school gave her the skills to cook European foods, along with the Indian dishes she learnt from her mother. She began writing after the passing of her mother, to capture in print the traditional recipes that have only been passed between her family orally, and so anyone who wants to learn to cook can give them a try.

When Marie Rowe left her hometown of Coventry, England, known for the legend of Lady Godiva, and Hitler’s destruction of its ancient cathedral, little did she know where her life would lead. She didn’t think for a minute that she would end up in California working with the crème de la crème of Hollywood talent.

It was certainly a circuitous path, as life journeys often are, but with her attitude of openness and trust, Marie fully embraced every experience, leading to an inspirational wealth of knowledge and inner growth, which she shares in this book.

Marie’s story is not only intriguing and captivating, but also uplifting and motivating. She encourages us all to live with faith not fear, and to be proud of who we are and what we’re capable of achieving.

Marie’s motto in life: “Security for me, is not knowing what’s around the corner.”

In February 2017, I visited Cameroon for the second time and found myself sketching my experiences in poems. The poems presented here were all written during my three-week visit. Towards the end of my visit, I was surprised by being given the royal title of Yaa by Shufai Tsenla, the reigning Fon’s (King’s) brother. It is a privilege and an honour to be invited to be part of such a distinguished family. I very much hope you enjoy these sketches of what is a rich, vibrant, and often challenging culture.
