We repeatedly hear that Christmas is ‘The most wonderful time of the year’, but for women in business, especially solopreneurs, this time of year can feel more like a juggling act than a sweet and cosy Hallmark Christmas film!
Between managing your business, attending social events, organising family gatherings, caring for children and elderly parents, and squeezing in festive school plays, it’s easy to let self-care fall to the bottom of your to-do list.
“You cannot pour from an empty vessel; you must take care of yourself first” Eleanor Brown
If you don’t prioritise your wellbeing, the demands of the festive season will drain you, leaving you exhausted and overwhelmed. Why is self-care so important over Christmas, and how can you make it work for you?
Why self-care matters
As a solopreneur, your business depends on you. Your energy and productivity will suffer when you’re running on fumes. Taking time to recharge means you have the energy to meet business and personal demands.
“In this game, everyone needs a break to refuel, recharge, and jump back in full throttle.” Helen Edwards
How does prioritising self-care impact your life?
- Improve relationships – whether it’s your family, friends, or customers, showing up as your best self makes your relationships more meaningful. When you’re stressed, it can be hard to nurture these connections.
- Set an example – many of us have children or employees watching how we manage stressful situations. When you prioritise your wellbeing and put self-care at the top of your to-do list, you not only help yourself but you also encourage others to see their mental and physical health as important factors.
- Ho, Ho, Ho – Christmas should be all about joy, laughter, and family, and not an excuse to add more tasks to your to-do list! Making time for yourself helps you to be fully present and enjoy the festivities.
Here are some of our favourite self-care tips for busy solopreneurs
Schedule self-care – just as you would book a client meeting or plan a family party, schedule time for yourself. Make it non-negotiable, whether it’s a 30-minute morning yoga session, an hour-long walk, or a soak in the bath.
Learn to say no – You don’t have to attend every event or say yes to every request. No is a complete sentence! Politely decline anything that doesn’t align with your priorities. Setting boundaries protects your time and energy.
Delegate – you don’t have to do it all. Can you delegate any tasks like gift wrapping, cleaning, or even outsource parts of your business? Older children or family members can also help out.
Create an action plan – write down everything you need to do for both your business and personal life, then list them in order. Break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and tackle them one at a time. This helps you avoid last-minute panic.
Create quiet time – Christmas can feel a bit chaotic. Look for those moments when you can find some quiet time. Maybe it’s before everyone wakes up or a quiet evening. Use this time to meditate, journal, or read a book.
Stay active – sticking with your exercise schedule of a daily walk is even more important at this time of year. After eating all the mince pies, you might not feel like it but getting outside and enjoying nature is best for your health. Even a quick 10-minute workout can help you maintain balance and maintain your energy levels.
Check-in with yourself – take a few minutes each day to reflect on your feelings. Are you overwhelmed? Tired? Joyful? Recognising your emotions can help you adjust your self-care routine to meet your needs.
Stop perfectionism – the perfect Christmas doesn’t exist! Let go of the pressure to create an Instagram-worthy day and focus on what truly matters: spending time with family and friends and enjoying Christmas in your own way.
