LinkedIn has been the go-to platform for professionals seeking to network, collaborate, and grow their businesses since its launch in 2003. But simply having a profile on LinkedIn isn’t enough.

Many business owners find themselves posting sporadically, sending out connection requests without doing their research, and still wondering why it’s not translating into leads or clients.

The truth? LinkedIn is evolving just like all the other social platforms, and it’s up to us to stay on top of these shifts.

What Isn’t Working on LinkedIn Anymore?

Let’s start with how you might be working against LinkedIn:

  • Sending mass connection requests with no personalisation – These are often ignored, rejected, or worse, damage your reputation as you appear spammy.
  • Posting and ghosting content strategies – Do you post, then run? Posting without engaging with others’ content is like showing up to a party, grabbing the DJ’s microphone to make an announcement, and walking out!
  • Sending salesy DMs – Cold pitching in messages without a relationship or context is more likely to get you blocked than booked.

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry, it’s fixable.

The Power of Nurturing and Engaging

LinkedIn rewards authentic connections and consistent interaction. Building relationships with your existing network is far more effective than constantly seeking new connections. It’s about nurturing your warm leads, not just aiming for a higher reach.

By establishing yourself as the expert in your niche, engaging meaningfully with others, and consistently offering value, you build trust. And trust is what turns a connection into a client.

So, how can you start making LinkedIn work for you again?

Five Action Steps to Turn Your LinkedIn into a Client-Generating Platform

Optimise Your Profile

Your LinkedIn profile is like your shopfront! It needs to be clear, eye-catching, and logical.

Make sure your headline clearly states what you do and who you help. Try to include what you do in the first few words so it appears when you comment on other posts, like in the example below. A quick glance tells us that Rowena is our go-to if we need help with B2B lead generation.

Use a branded banner image and make sure your ‘About’ section speaks directly to your ideal client. A professional headshot and a featured section highlighting your services or lead magnets will also elevate your profile.

Tip: Rewrite your headline to reflect the transformation you offer, not just your job title.

Engage Thoughtfully (and Daily!)

Spend a minimum of 10–15 minutes a day commenting on posts from your ideal clients or industry peers. Don’t just hit like. You need to be contributing to the conversation. This builds visibility and credibility faster than passively scrolling.

Tip: Create a list of 5–10 people you want to build relationships with and engage with them regularly.

Use DMs Strategically

Start conversations with your existing connections (remember to nurture the audience you’ve already built). Congratulate them on a recent post or ask a thoughtful question. Get to know them, and if it’s a fit, you can gently guide them to your services or even offer them a freebie you might have created.

Tip: Use voice notes or video messages in DMs to stand out as they’re more personal and memorable.

Show Behind-the-Scenes

Instead of only sharing those polished promo posts, share snippets of your process, a client transformation story (with permission), or something relatable from your workday. This builds trust and relatability. Have fun with this and show your human side.

Tip: Use the “3E” rule – Educate, Entertain, or Engage with your content.

Add a Call-to-Action

Be clear about how someone can work with you. Include a CTA in your posts, your ‘About’ section, and on your featured content. Invite your audience to take the next step (what action would you like them to take? For example, book a call, click a free download, or join a waitlist).

Tip: If you have a lead magnet or low-ticket offer, make it easy for people to access it straight from your profile.

LinkedIn isn’t about spamming sales messages or collecting thousands of connections. It’s about building relationships, showing up consistently, and offering genuine value. As women in business, we thrive when we’re part of a supportive community. Think of LinkedIn as an extension of your Socially Shared network and use it with intention. Start with small, daily actions. Nurture your audience, be human, and let your expertise shine. You might be surprised how quickly those likes and comments turn into DMs and discovery calls.
