Welcome to summer! The season of BBQs, family road trips, and maybe even a cheeky cocktail or two, but if you’re a small business owner, summer can bring a unique set of challenges – and opportunities!
Some of your clients may be on holiday. Others may be in full business mode with no sign of slowing down. What about you? You might be somewhere in the middle, trying to juggle school holidays while keeping your business ticking along.
How do you stay energised, visible, and productive over summer without burning out or vanishing completely? Here are some of the Socially Shared team’s top tips to help you cope over the summer with intention and balance:
Embrace (and Plan) Time Off
Guess what? You can take time off over the summer, and you should! We all need a full week away or an afternoon picnic in the park. Stepping back allows your brain to reset and sparks creativity, but to avoid a mountain of stress on your return, it’s worth planning ahead.
- Let clients know in advance about your holiday schedule.
- Set clear boundaries around response times.
- Add a cheerful out-of-office email with helpful links or contacts.
- Use scheduling tools like Meta Business Suite to organise your social content so you don’t disappear from your audience’s feed while you’re away.
Taking time off doesn’t mean pausing your business momentum; it means preserving your energy so you can hit the ground running.
Use the Quiet to Reflect and Review
If your client work slows a little, use that space wisely. The summer months are perfect for reviewing how your year has gone so far. Ask yourself:
- What’s worked well?
- What didn’t go as planned?
- Which services are selling best?
- Are your offers aligned with your audience’s current needs?
Time to review and reflect is vital. When you create space to check in with your goals, review your income streams, tidy your digital files, and map out your focus for Q4, your future self will thank you!
Set (and Simplify) Your Q4 Goals
We are six months into the year, with only six months left! This is a super time to set clear intentions for the rest of the year. Use this period to establish your Q4 strategy without the pressure of the usual last minute panic.
What do you need to think about so you feel ready and raring to go once the summer is over?
- What do I want to achieve by December?
- Are there projects I’ve been putting off?
- What marketing campaigns can I start planning now?
The end of your year might include launching a new product or service, increasing your visibility, or securing three new clients. Breaking your big goals down into monthly, weekly, or even daily actions will keep you feeling clear and energised.
Automate and Delegate
Keep your business visible while you’re in holiday mode with a little bit of automation magic.
Schedule your email marketing with a summer newsletter (or two) and include value-packed tips, product features, or a seasonal offer.
It’s easy to pre-schedule your social media and have your posts, reels, and stories set up before you board that plane, set off on your road trip, or choose to spend fun-filled days with the kids. Bonus tip: Repurpose your older content! Your newer followers might never have seen it, and your older followers will probably never remember that you’ve posted it once before.
Don’t forget to automate your admin tasks. Using tools like Dubsado or Calendly to automate booking links, invoices, or client onboarding will take all the stress out of your summer.
Where possible, delegate tasks and bring in a virtual assistant or freelancer to help with activities such as inbox management and social engagement. Check out the Socially Shared Directory for someone who can help.
Working smarter, not harder, frees up time to enjoy the summer and maintain your business visibility.
Stay Connected with Your Community
Not everyone slows down over summer. Many business owners, especially those without school holidays to juggle, keep going at full steam.
Most of the Socially Shared networking events are running through the summer, so you can continue to stay present, meet others, learn, and network. We also welcome you to bring school-age children along to these events so you don’t miss out on your networking meetups.
If you can’t make your in-person sessions, there are plenty of online sessions that might work in between running the kids to summer activities. Don’t forget, you can still pop into your favourite Facebook groups and offer value.
Try scheduling a few Zoom coffee chats with potential collaborators to keep yourself in the loop ready for September’s arrival.
You don’t have to go quiet just because the summer holidays are here. A quick check-in or show of support can strengthen connections that lead to future clients or referrals.
Keeping your business energy high over summer doesn’t mean being on it 24/7. It’s about being intentional and knowing when to rest, when to review, and when to plan. When you balance visibility with wellbeing, use tech to your advantage, and set clear goals, you can enjoy the season without sacrificing your business growth.
Here’s to a summer of flow, focus, and fun!
