As business owners, it’s essential that we constantly learn, grow, and adapt to stay ahead. Unfortunately, we’ve usually got a to-do list as long as the M6, so where can we fit professional development or personal inspiration into our already busy schedule? The answer is simple: podcasts!

Whether you’re commuting, dog walking, exercising, or even tackling those daily chores, podcasts offer a flexible way to absorb valuable information.

Why are podcasts such a great entrepreneurial resource? You can access mindset motivation, new ideas, and professional insights at the tap of a button.

The Benefits of Listening to Podcasts

Personal growth and mindset shift – we all know that business success starts with the right mindset. Listening to motivational and self-improvement podcasts can help you build confidence and resilience and strengthen your growth mindset.

Industry insights and business trends – staying up to date with what’s going on in your industry is important, and podcasts that feature guest expert interviews and market trends can provide you with valuable knowledge and new ideas.

Practical Business Advice – sometimes, you need an actionable tip on marketing, productivity, leadership, or sales, and the right podcast can provide these.

Networking – most podcast hosts have social media groups or communities where you can engage, giving you more opportunities to find coaches, mentors, or collaborators.

Entertainment – let’s not forget that podcasts are also entertaining and full of comedy, storytelling, and lifestyle conversations that can give you the balance and downtime you might need.

With so many podcasts available, how do you find the right ones for you?

How to Find the Right Podcast for You

You might jump headfirst and start listening to anything that pops up on your chosen streaming platform, but taking some time to determine your needs and preferences can be helpful first.

Define your goals – are you looking for business strategies, personal growth, marketing insights, or creative inspiration? Knowing what you need will narrow your search.

Check the hosts (and guests) – find hosts with experience, credentials, or perspectives that align with your values.

Look at the episode length – if you’re short on time, you might prefer quick tips. If so, go for short-form podcasts with 30-minute episodes. If you enjoy deep dives, opt for the longer one-and-a-half-hour episodes.

Follow Recommendations – asking your network for their favourite podcasts can be helpful. This is how the Socially Shared team have found some super hosts. It’s also why founder Karen Heap is launching the Socially Shared Podcast Directory in April 2025.

Many ladies in the networking community host podcasts, and the directory will be a one-stop shop to find the content you need. If you run a podcast and would like to be considered for the directory, drop us an email at info@sociallyshared.co.uk for more information.

Starting Your Own Podcast

Have you been considering starting your own podcast? Maybe you’ve been so inspired by the hosts you listen to that you want to join the podcasting community.

Every company can find authentic stories related to their brands, whether those stories are revealed through interviews, investigations, or real-life demonstrations. With some serious thought about what kind of stories your brand can tell and a commitment to honesty, you have what you need to begin making an engaging podcast, no matter what industry you’re in.” Nicole D’Angelo, Associate Editor with Skyword

Here are a few things to consider:

Find Your Niche – what unique perspective or expertise can you provide? Define your target audience and tailor your content to them.

Plan Your Format – will it be solo episodes, interviews, or panel discussions? Think about what style suits you best.

Keep It Consistent – what regular schedule can you commit to? (Weekly, biweekly, or monthly). This helps build an engaged audience.

Invest in Good Audio – quality sound makes a difference. A decent microphone and quiet recording space are important.

Promote and Engage – Share episodes on social media, repurpose content into blog posts and interact with listeners to grow your audience.

Podcasts will continue to grow in popularity and can make a big impact on your personal and professional life.
