September has that unmistakable New Year feeling to it. Even if you’ve been out of school for decades, the academic calendar still influences us with ‘back to work’ vibes. The summer holidays become a memory, the kids return to class, and your inbox is calling your name.
Have you taken time off or slowed your pace over the warmer months? Either way, September offers a perfect opportunity to reset, refocus, and get back to business.
Easing Yourself Back In
If you’ve had a break, resist the urge to dive headfirst into everything at once. A frantic scramble to hit the ground running often leads to overwhelm! Try this instead:
- Set aside a dedicated catch-up day to review emails, messages, and notes in one focused block.
- Prioritise the essentials and decide what needs your attention now, what can wait, and what doesn’t need a response at all.
- Give yourself time and space to transition back into full speed. A steady climb is more sustainable than a sprint.
What to Tackle First
When you’re back at your desk, it’s tempting to start with the easiest jobs, but setting the right order of priorities will help you regain momentum faster. Adopt an ‘Eat that Frog’ mentality with your to-do list. Build habits and manage your time better to get everything done.
Emails – Start by clearing the backlog and flagging key messages that need a follow-up. Block an hour or two to focus on this task without getting distracted. You could even hit ‘unsubscribe’ on any that you no longer need cluttering up your inbox.
Social Planning – Map out your content and promotions for the next few weeks so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. What do you want to focus on for the last quarter of the year? Do you have any products or services you want to talk about or launch? Block time to batch write some content and get it scheduled to give you the breathing space you need.
Networking – Now is the perfect time to reconnect with clients, collaborators, and peers. A quick check-in message can reopen doors and remind people you’re back. Check the Socially Shared events page and add some in-person events to your calendar.
Projects – In addition to emails, marketing, and networking, you’ll also need to reconnect with your client work. Pick one major project to focus on before adding new ones to your plate.
Reflect Before You Race Ahead
As we enter the last quarter of the year, it’s a great time to pause and do a quick review. Ask yourself the following questions to help you reflect on what’s happened and where you want to be. Here are a few you can use to guide you:
- What’s gone well in the past eight months?
- What lessons have you learned from any challenges?
- Which goals still matter, and which can be adapted or shelved?
Reflection isn’t about dwelling on the past but about making informed decisions for the future of your business.
“Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” Peter Drucker
Planning for Future Breaks
It might seem odd to talk about future breaks when you’ve only just slipped back into your office after summer, but (dare we say it?) Christmas is around the corner! If you found stepping back into work a little bumpy, think about how you can smooth the transition next time you take a break.
- Schedule a handover to yourself by leaving notes, reminders, and deadlines clearly marked before you log off for a holiday.
- Plan your priorities for that first week back by having everything mapped out so you’re not starting from a blank page – we all know how scary that can be!
- Batch your work ahead and schedule social content, emails, or blogs to keep your business ticking while you have a rest.
The academic new year is a great reminder that fresh starts aren’t just for January. By easing yourself back in with intention, tackling your priorities strategically, and reflecting on your progress, you can end the year strong, and set yourself up for an even better 2026.
