A marketing funnel is a super tool for converting your dream clients. A well-structured funnel guides your target audience from ‘awareness’ to ‘purchase’, offering them a smooth and intentional customer journey. But how do you create a funnel that works, and what types are most effective for solopreneurs and small business owners?
What is a Marketing Funnel?
A marketing funnel is a step-by-step process that moves potential customers from discovering you and your products/services to becoming a loyal customer. It typically consists of the following stages:
- Awareness – your potential customer finds you through social media, content marketing, speaking at events, SEO, or networking.
- Interest – they begin to engage with your content, sign up for a freebie, or follow you online.
- Consideration – this is when they explore what you offer, attend a webinar or workshop, read your testimonials, or consume more content.
- Decision – they buy your product or service.
- Retention – you build customer loyalty by nurturing your audience, which encourages repeat business through follow-ups and value-driven content.
Types of Marketing Funnels
There are a variety of marketing funnels you can use depending on your business, time, and resources. Here are some of the most effective for small business owners:
Lead Magnet Funnel
A lead magnet funnel is best for coaches, service providers, or digital product sellers.
To use this funnel, you would offer a freebie (for example, an eBook, checklist, template, or mini course) in exchange for an email address.
Once your target audience is interested in your free offer, you can nurture them with valuable emails that establish trust and then present an irresistible offer at the end.
Example: A business sales coach could offer a free ‘10 Steps to Creating Recurring Revenue’ guide. Once the guide is downloaded, it triggers an automated email sequence that nurtures the customer and presents an opportunity to join a paid mastermind, group programme, or high ticket 1:1 coaching.
Webinar Funnel
Webinars are a great way to reach your target audience and share your personality. These funnels are best for online educators/coaches, consultants, and service providers.
Using a platform like Zoom, you can host a free webinar or live masterclass where any attendees provide their email address to be able to join the live session (or receive a recording).
Providing valuable insights and demonstrating your expertise gives the attendees a snippet of how you work and what you offer while getting to know you better. At the end of your webinar, you upsell a paid offering with a limited time offer to entice them to sign up.
Example: A social media strategist could host a ‘How to Grow Your Instagram in 30 Days’ webinar. At the end, she offers a special discount on her coaching programme.
Tripwire Funnel
A tripwire funnel might be the perfect fit if you have a product-based business or work as a digital entrepreneur, and works well with a lead magnet.
Start by offering your audience a low-cost product (£5-£49) immediately after they opt in for a freebie.
This one small purchase increases the possibility of them buying from you in the future and exploring your higher-ticket services or products. Once they have bought your low-cost product, you can follow up with additional offers (but don’t bombard them).
Example: A graphic designer offers a free ‘Branding Colour Palette Guide.’ After signing up, the new subscribers are offered a £27 customisable Canva template pack (upsell number one). Those who purchase the Canva pack are then upsold a full branding package (upsell number two). Each level is a step towards something bigger.
Membership Funnel
A membership funnel would benefit subscription businesses, memberships, and exclusive communities. With this option, you can offer a free trial or a low-cost entry point to entice people into your community. Once they are in the trial period, you provide valuable content, discounts, bonuses, and ongoing engagement so they never want to leave!
By continuously engaging members with fresh content, support, and accountability, they become valuable associates within your community.
Example: A fitness coach runs a free ‘7-Day Meal Plan’ challenge. After participants complete it, they are invited to join a paid membership for continued meal plans, workouts, and coaching support.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Marketing funnels are a fabulous resource but can also flop if not properly implemented. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for:
- Lack of Clarity: If your audience isn’t sure what to do next, they’ll disappear. Make sure you have a clear CTA (calls to action) at every stage.
- Ignoring Nurture Sequences: It’s rare that a customer would buy immediately, so regular follow-ups and engagement emails help build that know, like, and trust element.
- Too Many Steps: A funnel that is too complicated can overwhelm your potential audience. Keep it simple!
- No Personality: Generic messages won’t resonate with your audience. Use personal, honest, and fun content where possible. Let your potential customers get to know you and your brand.
- Failing to Test: It’s important to regularly analyse your funnel’s performance and tweak it based on the data you receive from your chosen platform (open rates, click-through rates, conversion rates).
How to Get the Best from Your Funnel
There are a few easy steps to help you get the most from your funnel: Know your audience, provide value, test and tweak, and be consistent. However, another tool is also incredibly powerful – automation!
Use email sequences, chatbots, and scheduling tools to make your funnel work without your constant input.
